Side thruster is a special propulsion device which can generate ship lateral thrust (lateral thrust).
It is installed in the transverse guide barrel below the bow or stern line, and the magnitude and direction of the thrust
can be changed according to the need.
Generally, when a ship is approaching the dock, the canal, the gate, the narrow channel and the crowded waters,
it is necessary to drive slowly and change its course with the rudder frequently.
However, the slower the ship speed, the worse the rudder efficiency, which brings difficulties to the ship's maneuvering.
Especially for container ships, ro-ro ships and timber ships with large wind area, when sailing at low speed,
only relying on rudder effect to change course often can not meet the requirements, so tugboats have to be used to help.
The installation of side thrusters on board will play the following roles:
(1) Improving the maneuverability of ships, especially when the speed is zero or the speed is very slow.
(2) To shorten the time for ships to approach and leave the wharf.
(3) Save tugboat costs.
(4) Improving the safety of ship's maneuvering.
(5) It can reduce the times of starting and commutating and prolong the service life of the main engine.
One of the Operation attention Points:
Side thrusters can be used at speeds below 5 kn.
